Establishment of the VietGAP practical manual on vegetable crops
In agricultural production, green vegetable is one of the products that have been paid special attention to in terms of food safety and hygiene. To release VietGAP principles newly issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) into large production, producing safe products effectively, it is needed to have specific guidelines, detainling articles in chapters of VietGAP. In the framework of project “Establishment and control of agricultural food quality”, Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute (FAVRI) and National Institute of Plant Protection (NIPP) have been put in charge of compiling training materials and practical manuals of VietGAP on vegetable crops.
Production of agricultural products with high quality and safety for human health and animals is of pressing necessity of whole society of which green vegetables are paid special attention to in terms of food safety and hygiene because of the following reasons:
- Vegetable demand is regular, available for daily diet. partly consumed in raw form.
- Due to rapid rate of growth and development, nutrition uptake and unsafe factors are quite high.
- Green vegetables containing high percentage of water (85 - 95%) makes high water uptake including contaminants in water.
Therefore, safety of green vegetable products is made by environment and cultural practices. In Vietnam, a program of safe vegetable study and development has been established since 1990s that still has a long space compared with current production and living requirements. Several surveyed results showed that cultivated environment, especially concentrated and specialized vegetable areas around cities and industrial zones is getting polluted; green vegetable rate polluted by toxic chemicals through random analysis samples is still high. According to reports by Plant Protection Department, in 2006, safe vegetable quantity in the Red River Delta – the biggest vegetable area accounted for 8% of total vegetable quantity in the area.
From above situation, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development issued a decision 379/QĐ-BNN-KHCN dated 28 January 2008 on “Good Agricultural Practices for fresh fruits and vegetables in Vietnam - VietGAP”. This is an important turning point to enhance production management, quality assurance, and traceability, enabling safe fruit and vegetable products to be stably placed in markets.
In order to implement VietGAP profitably. It is needed to have specific guidelines, detailing articles in chapters of VietGAP. These documents are necessary for training activities, guiding officers and producers to implement VietGAP.
Participating in the project “Establishment and control of agricultural food quality” executed by National Agro-Forestry – Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (NAFIQAD), Department of Vegetable and Spicy Crops (FAVRI) and Department of Medicine, Weeds and Environment (NIPP) have been put in charge of compiling the following documents:
1. VietGAP practical manuals on vegetable crops
2. Training materials for trainers - TOT
3. Training materials for farmers
These documents are in process of edition and printing to serve project demonstrations as well as the VietGAP program.
