Workshop on Development of Vegetable seed in Vietnam and South Korea

Vietnam and Korea have  established  a long-term partnership in research and development  of more than 20 years, cooperating in programs and projects in a variety of fields, exchanging knowledges and experiences in research. 

 Under the project of “International Agriculture Project of South Korean” (KOPIA), the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute (FAVRI) held a workshop on “Development of Vegetable Seed in Vietnam and Korea” on Jun 13th-14th, 2013 to discuss and find the solutions for development of seed industry in Vietnam with the support from South Korea for materials and technologies.  The workshop had participation of the South Korea Deputy Ambassador in Vietnam Oh Young Nak; Dr. Trinh Khac Quang - Deputy Director General of Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Science (VAAS); Dr. Cho Weon Dae – KOPIA Project Director, Ass.Prof. Nguyen Minh Chau – Director General of Southern Horticultural Research Institute (SOFRI), MSc. Ngo Doan Dam – Deputy Director General of Field Crops Research Institute (FCRI), representatives of VAAS  Department of Science and International Cooperation; Management Board of the Fruit and Vegetable Research Isntitute; researchers of FAVRI and KOPIA Project as well as seed companies in Korea and Vietnam.


At the workshop, the Deputy Ambassador Oh Young Nak raised ideas for developing vegetable seed industry in Vietnam and Korean. He affirmed that the workshop would contribute to the development partnership of the two nations. VAAS Deputy Diector General Trinh Khac Quang emphasized that  developing Korean seed production in Vietnam is a way to go that benefits both of the nations. With its advances in natural conditions, production experience and labor source, the cooperation in seed production would  not only help Vietnam with active seed supply but may provide a valuable seed source for South Korea and third conuntries with reasonable prices. 


Besides researchers of the FAVRI and KOPIA project, the workhop targeted at seed companies in Vietnam and South Korea, enhancing linkage between stakeholders in the vegetable seed industry.  Through the discussion in the workshop, many obstacle  questions  were answered, solutions for certain issues were drawn out, prospects of developing  the vegetable seed industry and cooperation between the two nations were  likely clear and enhanced.
