FAVRI is one of 18 member institutions directly under Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Science (VAAS); an institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development that specializes in research on fruits, vegetables and ornamental crops on a scale of the northern and middle central provinces in Vietnam. The institute is situated in Trau Quy, Gia Lam, Hanoi.

I. Development of the Institute

FAVRI was founded as decision 71 NN-TCCB/QĐ in March 3 1990 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Technology (today known as Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development by merging the institutions (Canned Fruits and Vegetable Research Institute, Gia Lam Experimental Center for Horticultural Research and staff from Gia Lam Agricultural Production Camp) forming the present Institute office block, Phu Quy Fruit Crops Research Institute ( Nghia Dan, Nghe AN province), Xuan Mai Fruit and Vegetable Research Center (Chuong My, Ha tay Province), Phu Ho Fruit and Vegetable Research Center (Phu Ninh, Phu Tho Porvince).

As the decision of the Prime Minister No. 220/QD-TTg in 9 September 2005, FAVRI (Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute) has considered one of 10 member institutes of VAAS (Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences).

In the process of reorganization, several Institutes and Centers under FAVRI were rearranged becoming institutions under VAAS, including Phu Ho Fruit and Vegetable Research Center (now is an institution under NOMAFSI), Phu Quy Fruit Crops Research Institute (now is an institution under ASINCV). VIETSERI was once an institution under FAVRI but has become an institute of VAAS since 2010.

The institute has a system of experimental fields with plenty of vegetable, fruit and flower cultivars for research on breeding and technical advance for each kind of produce. The institute has established 1.5 ha of net-house of modern equipment to meet requirements of research in which cultivation condition is required to be protected, quarantined or controlled.

Besides, the modern lab system makes it easy to apply bio-technology into breeding and post-harvest processes as well as testing and  analyzing quality of vegetables, fruits and flowers.

2. Human resource

The Institute has 308 staff in the total, including 156 permanent staff and the rest are contracted employees working in the Institute departments and member institutions. There are 2 professors, 18 doctors, 85 masters and 92 bachelors/engineers.

III. Achievements

Results of the research have been widely transferred and applied into production, contributing to the development of the agriculture industry in general and of the vegetables and fruits in particular increasing the income of farmers in the North and Middle Central. Furthermore, The Institute has cooperated closely with the provincial units which are concerned in its research fields, producing encouraging results. The contribution of the Institute to the development of the vegetable and fruit sector in the recent years has proved that its research orientation is suitable for the trend of the sector and has met requirements of production.

1. Recognized cultivars and technologies

In the recent 10 years, the Institute has selected and bred 17 cultivars of fruits, 24 of vegetable and spicy crops, 19 flower and ornamental crops. The cultivars have been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as cultivars for pilot production and/or official cultivars.

The Institute has developed 15 cultivation protocols for fruit crops, 13 for vegetable and spicy crops, 06 for flower and ornamental crops and 01 for post-harvest treatment. All of them have been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and applied into the production.

2. Achievements in technology

2009: won Golden Cup in ASEAN techmart +3 for Protocol of producing Butterfly Orchid at industrial scale (awarded by Ministry of Science and Technology)

International cooperation

3. International Cooperation

The Institute has established a solid relationship with units, organizations in the world, such as: FAO, CIRAD, ACIAR, AVRDC, The International Biodiversity, Korean RDA, CARD, TFNet… The Institute has become a reliable partner for  international organizations and institutions to establish cooperation and conduct research on the field of fruits and vegetables. The Institute has determined that cooperating with international organizations and institutions is its direction to court the support of finance and technology as well as training completing the tasks which are assigned by the State and Ministry.
